Five years old is a starting point, not a reading test
One child may want you to read every word. Another may want to try a line before listening. Choose a book that fits the reading time you want to share, rather than expecting the same level of independence from every five-year-old.
Look at a page together. Notice how much text there is, whether the pictures interest your child and how much help they want. Move to another level when a book feels too easy or too difficult.

- Let them choose. Offer a few suitable books and look at the covers together.
- Share the first page. Read aloud yourself or use available narration.
- Pause on something interesting. Ask what they notice in the illustration, or repeat a word they want to hear.
- Let the session fit. Continue, revisit a page or save the next part for another time.
